I have not found any other markings on it. The guitar is all original including the case. Does anyone have an idea of it's age.

I think it might early fifty's but I'm not sure since the serial number is so low. Stringmaster82 United States Nov 12th, 2003 03:22 AM Fender steel guitar serial numbers are not reliable. Since the plates with the numbers where made in bulk all at one time, it's like pulling numbers out of a box(quite literally). Serial numbers under 1000 indicate that the serial number plate was made in 1949, but it could of sat there for years before being used. A good example is my 1951 Fender Custom, with a serial munber of 08XX.

Take the chrome nut/tuning tray off, there should be a month and year penciled in under there. For instance, if the guitar was made in March of 1952, it will read '3/52' Or take off the volume/tone control plate, sometimes there will be an inspection signiture with an inspection date in there. Like 'Louis April 9, 1951' or something like that.

But alot of times that isn't there, and your best bet is the tuning tray. Champion steels where made from around 1949 to 1954, when they where replaced with the Champ.

They where the low end student model, like what a Musicmaster or Duo Sonic is to guitars. Oh, and if it has the original pickup, that is the same pickup as the Broadcaster bridge pickup. They are not great steel guitar pickups, but that is the exact same pickup as the 1950 Fender Broadcaster. Alot of Tele guys take those pickups out of the steels and put them in their Tele's. But if you're into 'all original' you might just want to let it be. / / Reply to this Topic Display my email address Your Message: Link Address (URL): Link Title: Moderators: FDP, LLC Privacy Policy: Your real name, username, and email are held in confidence and not disclosed to any third parties, sold, or used for anything other than FDP Forum registration unless you specifically authorize disclosure.
